Project Description:
Valian is a combat game similar to Divinity Original Sin 2, Pathfinder Wraith of the Righteous, and Baldur's Gate 3, where players play a character that can roam around freely like an RPG but when in combat, it switches to a turn-based combat that the player can attack and use abilities against enemies. This game was developed by myself throughout an entire semester in a class where each student worked on the project that they pitched in the beginning and I will continue to develop this game after this semester is over. First few weeks, I worked on creating the systems of the combat like how to trigger encounters/switch between RPG free roam to turn-based combat, how to switch from player turn-enemy turn, how to add or remove enemies from the encounter, player distance-based movement during combat, and how the player can interact with UI to attack and use abilities. After I created that, I focused on creating working enemies by first the concepts and documents of them and then scripting them and getting their animations into Unreal. But after I started making the enemies, I noticed bugs happening once I added them into the turn-based combat system and had to do a lot of fixes with the enemy navigation to the player & avoiding other enemies, how to switch between enemies once they are done with their attacks, and player movement bugs. Once bug fixing was all done and enemies are in, I focused on player and enemy interactions like player attacks hitting the enemies and enemy hitting the player, and also making quality improvements to player interaction, UI, and the combat systems like adding a barrier around the combat encounter, player camera movement in & out of combat, and UI. Finally, I made a test level for the combat that introduces each of the enemies in their own encounters and then combines both enemies in the final encounter so the player can understand how they work together.

Combat and Systems Game Designer
I work on the combat and systems design while the animations are from Maximo but I had to retarget and place them into the game.

Created and designed a GDD document that explains what the game is about, what are the mechanics, challenges, and narrative.

Created and Designed enemy documents and player ability documents, 2D concept drawings of the enemies in Photoshop, and scripted the player and enemy abilities in Unreal Engine 5

Created a Test level to show the enemies off to the player and understand how the game will be played

Designed and created the systems in the game like the turn-based combat system, how to activate encounters, how to create new encounters with existing enemies anywhere in the game, and the player interacting with abilities and inventory.

Created player camera movement similar to other turn-based games like edge scrolling and camera rotation.

Polishing and bug fixing the player mechanics, enemies, and the turn-based combat system

Created the particles for the combat like blood spatter, spell effects, and flames.

Place the combat animations into UE5 and retarget them to work with the existing models to be used in my combat scripts, which I put into myself.
